Children grow up fast, that's a fact. And they are constantly falling, crawling, riding bicycles and playing crazy in the sandbox. All this quickly makes the knees of leggings and trousers unusable. Throw it away? Well, I do not. We have more interesting options. Try one or more of these DIY patches to cover up holes or just as a preventative measure.
Instead of throwing away another pair of leggings with holes in the knees, try these adorable little patches made from material from other old leggings. The entire project takes very little time and can be created by absolutely anyone with a sewing machine, or even a needle and thread.
Make a template out of any material you like, just make sure it's big enough to cover the holes.
Cut out fabric patches according to the template. Preheat the iron and press the fabric from the inside out.
Press the leggings at the seam to make it easier to turn the fabric inside out and make sewing easier.
Stretch the fabric so it is in one layer and then attach the patch on top of the hole.
Using a zigzag stitch, sew the patch along the outline.
Repeat on the other leg, then sew up the holes you made for convenience and enjoy the beauty.
This is really much more interesting than making standard glue-based patches. These patches are perfect for jeans.
The main attribute of this alteration is the unusual fabric with the image of superheroes. You can see this, for example, at IKEA.
Turn your pants inside out. First, cut strips of thermal fabric (proclamelin) and glue them to the inside of the jeans around the patch. Iron. Remove the fabric strips: you want only the adhesive layer to remain on the jeans.
Now place your beautiful fabric on the adhesive layer with the wrong side facing up. Press the iron through a piece of thick fabric to adhere the fabric to the jeans.
Once everything is hooked up and cooled, trim off any excess fabric. And then turn your pants inside out.
Take glitter vinyl (vinyl-based film), cut it into any shape you like and glue it using an iron.
Simple and brilliant, glitter is everything in this idea.
Detailed instructions on how to properly glue vinyl to fabric can be found.
Sugru is a special hardening rubber that molds like plasticine. Patches made from this material will make the knees of your child's pants virtually invulnerable. Sugru is highly flexible, wear-resistant, waterproof and machine washable. An ideal material for patches, but it is better to use it for prevention rather than for working with holes. You can buy it.
You will need:
Start applying sugru from the outskirts towards the center. Once you have applied the mixture to the perimeter, the round object can be removed. By pressing and smearing, fill the entire area of the circle.
To make the circles more than just smooth, add texture. To do this, print the sole of a shoe or a ribbed toy on a circle.
Now just leave the patches overnight until completely dry.
These patches may resemble monsters, but they are also charming. All you need is some felt and colored thread.
Trim the hole so that there are no fringes. Then cut a piece of colored fabric twice the size of the hole.
You can use some old T-shirts, the elasticity of knitwear is very suitable.
Then cut out the teeth for the monster using white felt. After attaching the fabric, use some embroidery floss and a large needle to stitch around the outside of the hole.
Now make two small eyes.
Just right? How impressive!
This patch option is suitable for babies and newborns. And they, of course, are made mostly for beauty, and not for practical purposes.
Just grab some fabric paint in a contrasting color and a stencil. Consumables: glue-based paper, fabric paint, pen, scissors, brush.
Draw and then cut out ovals from your paper.
Pull the tights a little and put them on your desk. Apply paint in 2-3 layers (depending on color). Let dry and wear.
Hello, dear craftswomen!
I admire women who try to do a lot for their family with their own hands. They intuitively feel the power in this.
It is no secret that by doing small household things for loved ones, such as: repairing or sewing clothes, bedding, knitting a sweater, preparing delicious food, etc., a woman energetically protects and strengthens her family and her home.
We understand that by putting a positive thought, love, into every stitch or stitch, a sweater becomes a talisman; sleeping on a bed made with your own hands is sweet.
When our children are healthy, they are very active and therefore their training and pants often end up torn. Therefore, today I will show you how to make a patch professionally, and most importantly efficiently, on knitted pants.
I selected contrasting suit fabric.
Since we are making patches on both legs, we need two suitable pieces of fabric. The size is slightly larger than the hole.
If it is possible to open the seam on both sides, then there is no need to mark a line for the inner one.
We're at the finish line. All is ready.
This is what training looks like from the inside out. Sample 11.
And this is the front view. Sample 12.
Now you know how to put a patch on knitted pants. Their shape varies. Choose.
You can come up with fun ones for children, we’ll talk about them later.
If you have any questions about this or any other topic, I will be happy to answer.
Write, I’m in touch))) Maybe we can discuss some other method
Take advantage of the collected information in the sections Fashion, Beauty, Health. There you will find answers to many of your questions.
Our active, cheerful children, whose energy is provided by the perpetual motion machine-jumper, often tear and wipe their clothes during outdoor games. Even durable denim does not always withstand the load. The most vulnerable places are elbows, knees, and the inner seams of pants.
Our mothers and grandmothers carefully sewed up the tear, darned holes or applied a patch, trying to make the repair site as inconspicuous as possible. The recommendations from books on home economics were called just that - how to quietly sew up a hole. Mended and patched clothes in past times were considered the lot of the poor.
However, designers and costume designers saw new creative possibilities in clothing defects. New decor Not only do children like it and prolong the life of things, but it also brings a smile and admiration to creative people.
It is better to sew up holes in inconspicuous places or apply a patch from the same fabric or use another fabric similar in color, composition and texture. We will leave prominent places for our creations.
The applique will hide the defect perfectly. It can be made from a matching or contrasting piece of fleece, felt, leather (imitation leather), suede that does not fray. The edges of corduroy, denim and linen appliqué need to be processed or fringe can be used as decorative element. The patch fabric is sewn on like a regular patch, but you can buy a ready-made one with an adhesive base and secure it with an iron.
If the hole is large, the base is strengthened with cobwebs or doublerin, then a patch is placed on top. Beads, beads, rhinestones, and embroidery are used as additional decor.
Bead embroidery will help to perfectly disguise stains; decorative cord and contrasting lace will distract attention from colored stains if the item has faded during washing. And if the stains are very visible, simply add a pattern of the same color to the fabric. Apply the drawing using a stencil.
Patches are most often sewn on from the front side, simply laying on top. The edges of the hole will remain on the wrong side. Angry birds and an owl are pre-assembled and sewn, and ready-made repair and decorative elements just need to be selected by color and size.
If you sew a patch on the bottom, beautiful pattern or a funny character will seem to be looking out of the hole. In children's applications, you can combine internal and external parts of the decor.
Children will be especially delighted by the applique monsters with a red mouth and white teeth made of felt. Make the monster's eyes and sew on multicolored hair from leftover yarn.
For older people, crazy applique is suitable, combining the ability to wield a needle and irrepressible imagination. Let's combine colored patches, lace, embroidery, contrasting stitches in the sashiko style. No preliminary drawing is needed, create right on the fabric!
The more holes, the greater the field for needlework, and it doesn’t matter whether the jeans were torn or not. You can embroider colored spots, geometric figures, stars, flowers and even your favorite cat.
If there aren't enough holes, take scissors and make as many as you need. Make patches different color in the form of large peas, mesh, knitted napkins. And the place of the round hole will be taken by a spider or another embroidered miniature.
The nuances of repairing jeans using patches. Photo ready-made solutions And original ideas.
We need clothes not only to cover the body, but also to create original fashionable images.
Jeans are a wardrobe item that has found its way into almost every person’s closet in a short time. They, like any other clothing, are prone to damage, holes and tears.
Because of our attachment to clothes, we often find it difficult to part with our favorite jeans. That’s why we arm ourselves with a needle and thread to repair them and extend their service life.
Fortunately, they are not going out of fashion. On the contrary, it throws up new ones fashion trends in their appearance. Therefore, putting patches on jeans, even in prominent places, is very appropriate and stylish.
Let's talk in more detail about the nuances of repairing torn places on jeans and techniques for eliminating them.
Patches vary depending on appearance and functionality:
Before putting a patch on jeans:
Sew patches while slightly damp to avoid fabric deformation and wrinkles.
To ensure that your patches on jeans look neat after hand sewing, consider a number of points:
A patch sewn to jeans using sewing machine looks neater, especially if you placed the first one in a visible place.
The technique of attaching patches in this case has its own differences.
When sewing a single piece of fabric, perform the preparatory work:
If you are patching your knees, place the patch on the front side. For symmetry and aesthetic perception of jeans after repair, sew symmetrically on a piece of fabric on the second leg.
Since this area is the most noticeable on jeans, then the best option its repair will be a large rectangular patch.
The sewing technique is as follows:
Depending on the size of the tissue damage, you will either:
The first option is ideal for small holes. Just choose the right color of sewing thread.
In the second option, opt for strengthening decorative patches. In this case, it is not at all necessary to maintain symmetry with the second leg.
The following materials will suit you for decoration:
The fastest and fashionable option- this is not patching, but tearing the hole even more. Give it a shaggy look and lengthen it. Add distressed detailing to highlight your jeans' individual design.
The more intricate decor option you choose, the more of your manual labor it will contain.
This area of jeans often breaks due to snags, for example, a nail on a bench. But its repair technique is similar to those discussed in the sections above.
Let's add some original ideas:
In addition to the web, you can glue a patch to jeans:
However, we note that after repairing with glue, your jeans will be susceptible to frequent washing. And in some cases, the glued patches may be rejected along with a piece of jeans. This happens due to the rigidity of the tissue that appears at the gluing site.
Original ways of designing patches on jeans will inspire them new life. Use the following:
The first two options have the advantage of being easily glued to jeans using an iron.
However, the last option is good for the creative moment. You create an original version of the patch with your own hands, which you then sew on.
Let's add a photo of a series of patch designs on women's, men's and children's jeans for your inspiration for repeating or creating original options:
So, we looked at the nuances of repairing jeans by sewing patches on the knees, between the legs, on the butt, above the knees, both manually and by machine. We got inspired by looking at ready-made ideas on women's, men's and children's jeans with sewn patches made from different materials.
If you have a pair of jeans with holes sitting on your shelf that you can't get around to throwing away, it's time to give them a new life. Arm yourself with several scraps of fabric and choose the best one to patch them.
Even your seams!
The situation that I will describe is familiar to all mothers without exception. The knees on my pants are wiped. Today, winter and demi-season pants are not so cheap that you can buy several of them for the season. I have two sons. Therefore, I know firsthand what holes in the knees are. Just recently, the eldest child came home from school, and there were holes in his knees. At the same time, they bought very, very strong pants for skiing. But less than two years later, holes appeared on my knees. All other places on the pants look perfect. Therefore, it became a pity to throw them away. I decided to put patches on the places where my pants had worn out.
First I went in search of places where they could repair clothes. It turns out that we even have several such places in our city. Where they provide minor clothing repairs. Patches can also be sewn on. Of course, you have to pay for this. For two patches you need to pay 400 rubles. I looked at the tools, at the sewing machine, and suddenly realized that I had the same set of tools and the same sewing machine sitting idle at home. This means that I myself can repair my child’s pants without any problems. And I decided to do it. And now I’m sharing with you how I sewed a patch on the knees of winter Bolognese pants.
In fact, there are several options for this type of repair. If the hole is small, then the repair will be very small. To do this, it will be enough to go to a fabric store and buy a regular applique. Modern applications can be selected at different topics. These can be flowers for girls and cars for boys. Or there may be different geometric shapes. In general, the choice of such application models is quite large. There are plenty to choose from. The applique can be glued or sewn on for added strength. But here's what you need to remember. Modern winter and demi-season suits can be glued and made of membrane. If your pants are made of this kind of fabric, then it’s better not to let them get to big holes, but to have time to sew a patch on a small fray. In this case, you will not need to rip the seams on the sides. To be honest, it is not recommended to glue it to the membrane. Just sew.
The second option, which will be described in this article, is suitable for those who have quite large abrasions or even holes on their knees. In this case, it will no longer be possible to get by with “little blood.” You will still have to rip out your pants and sew on real patches that fit properly. Doing this is more labor-intensive, but the result will be excellent. And the patches can last longer. And they will more reliably protect the child from cold and bruises.
Now let's see what patches can be made.
1. Application. This is the simplest type of patch. You can just glue it on. You can also strengthen it and sew it on. Moreover, this can be done manually. Just baste, making stitches more often. Appliqués are suitable, as mentioned above, for small abrasions or very small holes. If your pants have just started to deteriorate, then appliqués will help prevent further destruction of the fabric. Today the choice of applications is quite large. You can choose for both girls and boys. There are applications with popular cartoon characters. And there are neutral ones that will simply look attractive. In addition, with the help of applications you can create an almost original item. Which will look neat and at the same time stylish and fashionable. However, when choosing appliqués, you should take into account the characteristics of the fabric from which the pants are made. I repeat once again, if the fabric is modern, membrane-based, then it is better to consult in advance how exactly to attach the applique to the pants: glue or sew. I only know one thing: the membrane doesn’t like high temperatures. Does not tolerate irons or other similar devices for gluing fabric.
2. Simple patch. Conventional patches consist of a piece of fabric sewn into place over the hole. These patches are suitable for pants with large tears or holes. In my case, this was the only suitable option.
And it is this option that I will consider in detail. When I was thinking about how to sew a patch on the knees of bologna pants, I searched for information on the Internet for quite a long time. And I still didn't find it detailed instructions. But there are special companies that do minor clothing repairs. This means there are sewing instructions. Only I couldn't find it. Therefore, here in this article I am sharing my own experience. Sewing knee patches is a fairly simple, albeit time-consuming, process. But nothing is impossible for modern woman. Especially if she really wants to know or learn something 8)
So, when you have decided on the type of patch, it’s time to choose the fabric for it. I have already written that in this article we will talk about a sew-on patch. If you choose an application, then everything is simple:
We are talking about a fabric patch that needs to be sewn on. Choosing the fabric for such a patch is important and necessary stage. At first I wanted to choose a simple raincoat fabric. This was recommended to me at a fabric store. But after feeling the material and looking at it, I decided that a patch made from such fabric would only last my son for a few days. The boys need something more serious. As a result, I went in search of a fabric that is denser and more resistant to various influences. And such fabric was found. This is a tarpaulin-based fabric. Now I don’t remember what it’s called, but this fabric is found quite often in stores.
This is a fairly thick fabric. At the same time, it is easy to bend and sew. Colors vary. But I found only three colors: brown, black and this green, protective color. Since my son’s jacket is green, it was decided to make the patches green. After searching online for more information about what fabric would be best for patches, I found a fabric called “CATSEYE PU”. This is a special jacket fabric. Jackets and overalls are made from it. It is durable, elastic and at the same time resistant to wear and heavy use. There is also camouflage fabric that is also suitable for patches.
Once you have chosen the fabric, you need to think about the tools you will need to repair the clothing. I had these tools:
Here, in fact, are all the tools that I needed to sew a patch on bologna pants.
Now about an important question that, I’m sure, worries many mothers: is it necessary to rip your pants in order to sew on a patch? My answer: if you want the patch to look neat and be sewn firmly and securely, then you will have to rip your pants. True, this is not difficult to do. And you don’t need to rip the entire pant leg, but only in certain places. Below I will tell you where and what to rip. If you don’t rip it apart, you won’t be able to sew it on with a machine. And manual seams may not be as secure. And it takes a long time to sew by hand. At least for me it was easier to rip it apart and then sew it on.
How and where to rip. In general, you will have to cut it in two places. The seams on both sides need to be hemmed, but the dimensions should be slightly larger than the size of the patch.
This is to make sewing convenient. You also need to rip the lining from the inside at approximately the same distance. This can be done from any side that is convenient for you for sewing. Rip the lining only on one side.
Here I need to add that I am not a professional seamstress. And not even an experienced amateur. I'm just a mom who is interested in making things with my own hands. Therefore, I made a lot of mistakes when I sewed the patch on for the first time. And I want to tell you about mine typical mistakes, which were admitted by me with the first patch.
There are still a few points that are better to pay attention to. Firstly, most machines are not designed for rubberized fabric. Therefore, it is sewn rather poorly. But if you help the machine and push the fabric, then everything will go like clockwork.
Secondly, you immediately need to think about whether the main seams will be hidden or whether they will be visible. On one of my knees it turned out that one seam was visible.
But sewing like this is very, very inconvenient. I did it differently with the other knee. I hid the seam. And immediately sewing became easy and simple.
Third, I made a double patch. I just took one patch and placed it on top of another and sewed it on. I think it will be much stronger this way. Enough for at least next year.
So, you have ripped the fabric from the sides and from the inside. Now you need to cut the patches to the desired size. What I did was simply measure the piece of fabric on my knees that I would like to patch and transfer it to the patch fabric. At the same time, I also took into account seam allowances. It turned out to be a little more than the patch itself. Before sewing the patch on, I applied it to the pants again and looked to see if everything fits together. I like it or something can be changed.
If you like everything, then we start sewing. I started sewing from the outer edge. I made a sort of “pie” out of the fabric of my pants and the patch fabric and swept it all away. I made the seams inside.
This makes sewing more convenient and looks neater and more beautiful. After everything was basted, I simply sewed it on the machine. All. One seam is ready.
Now you need to sew at the top and bottom. To do this, you need to try and turn the trouser leg a little so that you can baste the patch. After basting, be sure to turn it back and see if everything is fine. Is the fabric moving, is there anything wrinkled anywhere, etc. If everything suits you, turn it inside out and sew it on by machine. It is best to do the top and bottom one at a time.
After the top and bottom are done, the last seam remains, on the side with inside pants To do this, turn the trouser leg inside out. I tore open the inside of my pants on this side. And through this internal ripped seam I baste the patch.
I turn the trouser leg right side out again and check if everything is fine. If everything suits me, then I turn it inside out again and sew it on by machine. All. Consider this the main work is finished. All that remains is to sew up the ripped seam from the wrong side. But this is already a matter of a few seconds.
All. Turn the trouser leg right side out and admire the result. The patch turned out to be a sight for sore eyes!
Now we do the same with the other pant leg.
All actions are the same. Therefore, no problems should arise here anymore. If everything is done correctly, the result will not be long in coming.
It took me about 1.5 hours to sew on the patches. But this is despite the fact that I did this for the first time in my life. I think that in next time I can do it faster if necessary. And the work will be done more accurately. In total: I spent money only on the material itself. I bought 40 cm of fabric with a width of 1.40. There is still time left for the next patches. It cost 180 rubles. If I took it somewhere for repairs, I would pay at least 400 rubles. The savings are obvious.
Sewing a knee patch onto bologna pants is easy and simple. All you need for this:
A few more notes. Here is the first patch.
It turned out a little clumsy and... I really wish I didn't have such a patch anymore. Errors are visible. When I sewed on the second patch, I tried to avoid these mistakes: I made the seams inward and turned the trouser leg inside out each time to see how it would look: if there were any distortions and so on.
