The carol ritual was supposed to ensure well-being and income in the household. Carols, preserved from ancient times, have reached us with very minor changes. They talked about the power of Kolyada. Later, Russian folk began to sing short carols at Christmas, on Holy Evening. In these Christmas songs they glorified not only Kolyada, but also shared with others the joyful news of the birth of little Jesus. Every year, on January 6, New Style, on the night before Christmas, carols were sung with wishes of happiness and income to the owners of the yard. The arrival of children was considered a particularly good sign for prosperity. The owners of the houses were happy to listen to their performances. Children's wishes for well-being were generously “paid for” - the children were given sweets and even coins. The Christian "Walking with the Star" has always been considered a children's tradition. They usually went to praise Christ early in the morning on Christmas Day. IMPORTANT: Nowadays, caroling is perceived simply as entertainment. But our ancestors took “difficult guests” very seriously. And it is not surprising, because carolers symbolized the souls of ancestors who come to their descendants, bringing them happiness.
All families were looking forward to the carolers with great impatience and prepared refreshments for their arrival. For such purposes, “difficult guests” took the bag.
It often happened that in large villages 5-10 groups of carolers could approach one house. It was not accepted to refuse them, otherwise the inhospitable hosts risked being accused of greed.
Caroled mostly boys and girls or unmarried men and unmarried women. Children could also participate in the ritual. They especially liked performances on the gospel theme, which were sometimes performed in front of hospitable hosts.
Children often enjoyed caroling along with adults It is curious that each region had its own characteristics of caroling. So, Volga region and central zone of European Russia were characterized by the fact that “difficult guests” addressed all the hosts at once, outlining to them a specially exaggerated picture of domestic well-being. The folk custom of singing carols dates back to ancient times. Thus, our Slavic ancestors extremely revered Veles, the god of fertility, wealth and family economy - his holiday was celebrated on the day of the winter solstice. It was believed that on this day a new young sun was born, so all the fire in the house was extinguished and a new one was lit using flint or friction. Later, Christianity left its “imprint” on this pagan holiday, endowing carols with a religiously sublime meaning. The texts of many carols on the theme of Christmas are song retellings of entire gospel stories of the birth of Jesus. According to tradition, carolers began to walk around the courtyards on the evening of January 6, loudly singing Christmas songs with good wishes to the owners in the new year. In return, the crowd of mummers received tasty gifts and even money in their bag. The children, the most zealous carolers, were especially looking forward to Christmas. Despite the bitter Christmas frost, groups of children ran from yard to yard laughing and asked permission to sing carols.
